SUCCESS STORIES OF IEDSS

Laxmidhar Behera (V.I)

Father’s Name : Iswar Behera,

Vill –Baghuapasi, Daspalla,

Academic Institution : B.S. College, Daspalla,

District – Nayagarh

BACKGROUND :

Born with visual impairment in a highly poverty stricken family in a remote village of Daspalla block, Laxmidhar bore the brunt of social stigma of disability as a curse. As usual he was neglected and rejected by his family, not to speak up local community. He was sent to a special school far away which ironically enhanced his isolation and confinement. His father being a migrant labour hardly spared time for his child which added to miseries of Laxmidhar. Back home from the special school, Laxmi had to face discrimination in the family itself where he was treated in a very despicable way noticeably different from his brother and sister. Even his shoes purchased from out of his disability pension was forcibly given away to his younger brother Bimba.During the special school tenure, his learning of mobility was almost zero. Similarly his knowledge of Braille writing was equally very poor. He could hardly feel the pulse of freedom and socializations during this period. But as good luck would have it, Laxmidhar happened to come across some children with visual impairment from Daspalla project area. He was tempted to visit IIEC resource-cum-training center at Daspalla. Being overwhelmed with so many facilities right from mobility training to computer education, Laxmidhar made up his mind to join the integrated setup of IIEC. Innumerable hurdles encountered by Laxmidhar were refusal of the last school authority to approve of transfer, non-cooperation of the official machinery to help him out of the situation and frequent running from pillar to post for transfer from a special setup to a general school. The special school teachers including teachers from general school raised their eyebrows as to the feasibility of a born blind student accommodating himself among general students.

INTERVENTION :

IIEC professionals took it up as a challenge to prove that a born blind student like Laxmidhar could be conveniently integrated into the mainstream education. The most shocking and ironical predicament for Laxmidhar was that his own parents and brother refused to entertain him and even his brother threatened to quit home if Laxmi was accepted by IIEC resource teacher, the situation remained unchanged. Therefore IIEC professionals took up the mantle to take care of Laxmi for a transit period until his family accepted him. And consequently Laxmi’s parents and brother got motivated by IIEC volunteers and agreed to accommodate him. Similarly after initial resistance by some teachers in the school, Laxmidhar got admitted into Madhyakhand high school under Daspalla block.

Special strategies were applied inside the general class room such as sitting in the first bench, provision of a tape recorder and installation of electric system inside the class room ,rigorous mobility training, appropriate and affective teaching of Braille. Besides these academic interventions, Laxmidhar was inspired to participate in co-curricular activities like games, athletics, sports and acting. His first appearance as a protagonist in a drama acting against a sighted damsel attracted huge applause from audience which helped break all barriers between disabled and non-disabled communities.

Laxmidhar to his credit has already proved his academic mettle by winning distinction not only in the classroom but beyond the boundaries. He has represented state in the national level blind cricket tournament. While pursuing his own studies, He is also providing remedial teaching support to students learning Braille and other subjects. His level of mobility with white cane and sometimes without any support is a talk of the town. His creative mind had helped him to bag an award of distinction for his science project, i.e, inclusive Traffic management in the state level science exhibition. His wide exposure to innovative TLMs developed under IEDSS programme had also helped him to broaden and deepen his understanding in various spheres.
